Abstract
Background: Each individual has the right to a safe and satisfactory sexual and reproductive life. Therefore, several countries have made an effort to make Reproductive Health available to their population. However, there are few results regarding the implemented policies in Portugal.
Objective: The aim of this work was to study the current Portuguese male population reproductive health status.
Methods: The sperm donors candidates from the Portuguese Public Gamete Bank, registered between 2011 and 2018, were used as sample. Spermogram values were evaluated with respect to sociodemographic and risk factors.
Results: This is the first study realized in this population, and it allowed to conclude that in this sample there has been a decrease in sperm quality throughout the last 9 years, and that spermatozoa progressive motility is inversely associated with the increase of body mass index. It was also identified an association between drug use and the decrease of sperm pH.
Conclusion: Changes in sperm quality have important consequences in male fertility. Most of the identified causes of decreased sperm quality are modifiable factors and should therefore be addressed since an early age.
