Abstract
Research Question: Is the AMH level correlated with age and number of mature oocytes recovered from stimulated cycles?
Design: A descriptive, retrospective, observational study.
Results: Data about 1500 patients undergoing a Brazilian IVF clinic were analyzed. The exclusion criteria (patients not undergoing IVF and/or without the AMH level) and the inclusion criteria (women between 20 and 50 years undergoing IVF) included only 733 patients. Patients were divided by age into three groups (≤35; 36-39; ≥40 years old). The mean AMH concentration ranged from 2.65 to 1.35 ng/mL while the total number of recovered oocytes ranged from 9.5 to 5.42. Both data were significantly different among the groups. The mean number of mature oocytes ranged from 7.14 to 4.58. There was no significant difference in the number of mature oocytes between the 36-39 years and ≥40 years age groups. A negative correlation was observed between the age and the total number of recovered oocytes, as well as the number of mature oocytes. AMH showed a negative correlation with age, although a positive correlation with the total number of oocytes and the number of mature oocytes has been observed.
Conclusions: With advancing age, there is a significantly decrease in AMH levels, and the total number of recovered oocytes and mature oocytes decreases significantly. However, there is no significant difference in mature oocytes between patients over 36 years. In addition, there is a positive correlation between the plasma AMH levels and the total number of recovered and mature oocytes from stimulated cycles.
