Abstract
Introduction: Human sperm parameters varies widely among men and even between consecutive samples in the same man with respect to their concentration, motility, morphology and DNA fragmentation. Less is known about the characteristics of sperm in short abstinence periods. Hence, the current study was conducted to determine the influence of consecutive ejaculate on above parameters after short abstinence period in oligospermic males.
Materials and methods: The observational study was conducted from January 2018 to February 2019 in sixty-seven males undergoing primary infertility treatment at SDM Fertility Centre, Dharwad, India. The first semen sample was provided after an abstinence period of 2-7 days while the second sample was collected 1-3 h after the first. The two consecutive semen samples were analysed according to the WHO 2010 criteria for semen analysis and their parameters were compared. Furthermore, measuring sperm DNA fragmentation.
Results: Most of the participants belonged to the age group of 31 to 40 years (68.6%) and majority of the participants obtained second sample in 1-hour interval (88%) whereas (10.4%) of them in 2-hour interval and least collected their sample in 3-hour interval (1.4%). The mean concentration(mill/ml), total motility & progressive motility (%) of the second sample was significantly higher than the first sample (p<0.05). Also, second ejaculate showed a lower DNA fragmentation than the first ejaculate.
Conclusion: Our study inferred that the consecutive semen samples collected 1-3 hours apart has the potential role in managing the subfertility in oligospermic males. Further research, particularly randomized trial, must also explore this relationship.
