Abstract
Objectives- To study the knowledge, attitude and intentions towards fertility preservation (FP) in cancer patients among health care providers(HCPs) in North India.
Methods- This was a 23-item oncofertility survey conducted through a structured questionnaire designed after reviewing previous studies on this topic. The questionnaire was sent through WhatsApp links to health care providers involved in care of cancer patients and their responses were analyzed subsequently.
Results- Of 750 HCWs contacted, response rate was 37.7%(283) and comprised of gynecologists, surgeons and oncologists . Although 90% respondents were aware about harmful effect of cancer therapy on ovarian function but 76% reported to have partial knowledge about FP. Only 1/4th were aware about time needed for oocyte cryopreservation and only one third were aware regarding number of semen samples required for FP. Among those involved in care of young cancer patients, only 50% reported that they refer patients for FP. Most common reason for not sending patients for FP was lack of awareness about the subject (43%). More than 90% wanted to improve their knowledge in the field of oncofertility through continued medical education programs and seminars.
Conclusion- The study emphasizes the need for establishing well-structured networks to improve knowledge regarding FP among HCPs so that cancer patients get the opportunity to have their own genetic offspring after cancer is cured.
