Infertility is one of the major problems in modern human societies that has affected a significant percentage of couples around the world. It has been identified that various causes and factors are effective in infertility of couples, and heavy metals are one of them. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and copper on epidemiology of infertility in men and women. This study was conducted using related keywords including male and female infertility and heavy metals in the authoritative scientific databases of Pubmed, Google Scholar, Science Direct, etc., which were limited to the published results from 1982 to 2020. The results showed that in recent years, the number of infertile people has increased, which is related to various environmental, occupational and genetic factors. The heavy metals lead, cadmium, and copper cause infertility in couples through various mechanisms, such as changes in sperm motility factors, decreased semen quality, or effects on the egg. Exposure to physical parameters such as radiation (both ionized and microwave) and heat and stress and mental disorders and chemical parameters such as cigarettes, respiratory pollutants (lead), insecticides and pesticides, working with anesthetic gases, Working with mercury and cytotoxic drugs is another important contributor to infertility.
