Abstract
The aim of this study is to report the procedures undertaken in the laboratory of semen of a university hospital specialized in human reproduction in Rio de Janeiro, principally Homologous Artificial Insemination (HAI); also taking into account a more social aspect, i.e., values, yearnings and questionings externalized by couples using the service. Besides providing a possible solution to the search for children, the offer of assisted reproduction (AR) reinforces woman's fate or life plan. The bond to the service remains based on the idea that "now my dream of having kids will come true." Nevertheless, for the operationalization of the access to ARTs, at the public sector of medicine (SUS), we should count on the implementation of the National Politics in Assisted Reproduction as formulated in the GM /MS 426/ 2005. It did not take place and today it has even been removed, no longer being in force. It makes very clear the distance between the “accomplishment of the desire for children” and the reality of the provision of means and resources for ART at the medical public level in Brazil.
