Abstract

Watermelon is a popular fruit consumed around the world for its diverse nutritional and health-promoting qualities. It has been used as an alternative medicine to treat many ailments including erectile dysfunction, swelling, rheumatism, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disorders, gout, diabetes, infections, dehydration, and kidney disease. Watermelon has been noted to possess anti-microbial, anti-helminthic, antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, and antihypertensive properties that may contribute to its therapeutic use. In addition to these applications, watermelon has been used in various parts of the world as an herbal remedy to enhance male fertility. Watermelon has been reported to improve semen quality, erection, redox status, testosterone level, and gonadotropin secretion. Watermelon also contains vitamins and phytochemicals such as phenol and certain flavonoids that contribute to its antioxidant properties.
