LnCRNAs in the Regulation of Endometrial Receptivity for Embryo Implantation

Abstract

The endometrial receptivity development is critical for the effective implantation of embryos and pregnancy initiation. Awareness of the molecular regulation underlying the conversion of the endometrium to a receptive phase is essential to improve implantation rates in fertility therapies, like in vitro fertilization (IVF). Given that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are important gene regulators, the role of lncRNAs has been assessed in the endometrium. Previous investigations have reviewed the role of lncRNAs in endometrial disorders such as endometriosis and endometrial cancer. In this short review, we provided up-to-date information on the role of lncRNAs in regulating endometrial receptivity. As endometrial remodeling varies substantially between species, the key events of the endometrial cycle in mice and humans were summarized and then we reviewed the lncRNAs recognized so far in these two species that may have functional importance in establishing receptivity. There are 742 lncRNAs in humans, and 4438 lncRNAs exist in mice that may potentially modulate endometrial receptivity. LncRNAs that regulate matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and Let-7 have been observed in both species. Future investigations should assess lncRNAs as therapeutic targets and/or biomarkers to diagnose and increase endometrial receptivity in human fertility therapy.
