Abstract
Since Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors are the class of medications most used in depression treatments, the present work aims to discuss the main findings related to their effects on male fertility, considering seminal parameters and sperm function. Take in account the research question: �What are the adverse effects of the main antidepressants Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors on male fertility?� a systematic review of the literature was carried out. The PRISMA program was used to systematize the search process using keywords directly related to the research question. 125 studies were found and, through the initial screening, by reading the abstract, 18 studies were selected for more detailed analysis. As a result, 10 works were selected and used in this review. These studies point to adverse effects of this class of antidepressants on male fertility, involving a decrease in serum testosterone levels, decreased sperm production, decreased sperm reserves in the epididymis and increased sperm transit time in the tail of the epididymis. Studies suggest that the use of these antidepressant medications may have adverse effects on male fertility, as mentioned above, but it is noted that more randomized clinical and experimental research is needed to evaluate the mechanisms of spermatogenic failure, as well as investigate the criteria underlying these effects.
