Abstract
Type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) accounts for 95% of diabetes cases globally. This comorbidity is defined as the resistance of body cells to insulin, leading to a wide spectrum of metabolic alterations in the body. Such alterations have the capacity to modulate or render dysfunctional sperm production in men of childbearing age. Therefore, this study explored the influence of T2DM on sperm production in patients undergoing assisted reproductive techniques. Although no significant difference in overall seminal quality was observed between T2DM patients and controls, higher HbA1c levels were associated with increased sperm DNA fragmentation. These findings suggest that T2DM may not significantly improve overall seminal quality but may impact sperm DNA integrity qualities.
