Abstract

Objective: To assess whether women in the medical field have different reproductive planning compared to women from other areas of higher education. Additionally, to evaluate their knowledge of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and interest in oocyte cryopreservation. Methods: This analytical cross-sectional study was conducted through an anonymous online questionnaire, applied between November and December 2024. Brazilian nulliparous women were included and divided into two groups: the study group (medical students and physicians) and the comparison group (women from other higher education fields). The questionnaire covered sociodemographic data, lifestyle habits, professional trajectory, affective relationships, use of contraceptive methods, reproductive intentions, and knowledge about ART. Results: A total of 905 women participated. The medical group (n=490) showed higher income, more physical activity, and lower prevalence of smoking (p<0.0001). Participants in this group more frequently reported that professional demands negatively impact affective relationships and postpone motherhood plans. Although they wish to have more children, they plan to conceive at a later age (p<0.0001). Knowledge and acceptance of ART, including oocyte cryopreservation, were significantly higher in this group, with over 58% considering the future use of such techniques. Conclusion: A medical career significantly influences women’s reproductive behavior, leading to delayed motherhood despite stronger reproductive desires. Early access to fertility education and ART options should be considered strategic for ensuring reproductive autonomy among women in medicine.
