Burnout in Embryologists Working in Assisted Reproduction: Data from a Cross-Sectional Worldwide Study

Abstract

Background/Objectives: Recent studies have highlighted the concerning burnout situation of embryologists working in assisted reproduction (AR), with embryologists showing the highest levels among professionals working in AR. Data on burnout in these professionals in different worldwide zones is still very limited; therefore, the aim of this study was to find out burnout levels among these professionals in the World Health Organization-zones, comparing four of them. Methods: The study presents a cross-sectional design. A worldwide online survey assessed burnout in a sample of 759 respondents from 74 countries. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey composed of 15 items was completed assessing emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and lack of personal accomplishment. Results: Over 80% of embryologists showed emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, with lack of personal accomplishment present in a lower, but non negligible, 67%. Means comparison between the four regions of Europe, Latin America, North America and Western Pacific produced a single significant difference, embryologists working in Europe presented higher lack of personal accomplishment than those working in Latin America. However, significant differences were found between the percentages in the low, moderate and high levels of the three-burnout dimension among the world zones. Gender is an element to be considered when burnout is studied in embryologists, since 97.8% of embryologists at the high level in the three burnout dimensions were women. Conclusion: Burnout is a serious worldwide problem in embryologists working in AR. Future research should study stressors and preventive strategies to prevent and mitigate burnout and consider gender as an important variable.
