Abstract
OBJECTIVE:In recent decades it has been reported an association between the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies(APLs) and obstetric complications such as recurrent pregnancy loss(RPL), unexplained stillbirth, intrauterine growth restriction, preeclampsia and placental abruption. Up to 30% of APL has been found in this group of patients.
Methods:A prospective and descriptive study in 2163 patients refered to our center for antiphospholipid antibodies testing. Patients age, recurrent spontaneous abortion history, secondary infertility, coagulation disorders, autoinmune diseases backgroung (rheumatoid arthritis AR and systemic lupus erythematosus, LES ) were the analyzed variables.
RESULTS:The study included 1952 women, 1408(72%) with ages between 20-40years, 361(18%) between 41-50years and 183(10%) older than 50years. A group of 211men , 51 with ages between 20-40years(24%), 69(32%) 40-50years and 91(43%) older than 60years. In this group, 14.6%(31) had positive titers for APLs. In 66%(140) of patients the test was requested due the presence of any coagulation defect, of this group only 15% had positive titers for APLs. The 33%(71) remaining, had a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, and in them only 14% of patients had positive titers for APLs. In 1952 women, positive titles for APLs were reported in 18%. Regarding the related pathology, in 829 patients with RPL 24% were positive for APLs, 536 with coagulation defects reported 19% for APLs, in 171 LES patients 14% were positive for APLs, 114 with antiphospholipid syndrome had a 14% for APLs, 202 with AR presented APLs in a 13% and 100 patients with infertility a 6%. Of the 929 patients who requested
