Abstract
OBJECTIVES: 1. To determine the prevalence of Chla- mydia antibodies in patients who consulted for infertility at IVI Panamá Clinic. 2. To evaluate by Hysterosalpingography the presence of tubal pathology in patients with positive chlamydia.
METHODS: A retrospective descriptive transversal study A chart review of patients who attended at the IVI Panama clinic with primary infertility since January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2012 was conducted. We included the patients who had safe at their records the results of chlamydia antibodies and hysterosalpingogram.
RESULT(S): A total of 326 records were reviewed . The mean age of patients was 27.6 years, and the mean time of sterility was 1.5 years. The Chlamydia antibodies were present in 21.2% of the patients. Tubal pathology was reported in 50.7% of patients with positive chlamydia. The 29.4% of patients had tubal pathology, and the inflammatory changes were the main condition of the tubes (28.5%). Only 21.7% of the patients with positive chlamydia got pregnant. The specificity, negative and positive predictive value of chlamydia test were respectively: 85.2% 76% and 51 %.
CONCLUSION(S): Given that the prevalence of chlamydia infection in infertile women is high and that the serological test for Chlamydia antibodies has good specificity , negative and positive predictive value, we believe that this serological test should be included in the routine studies of women who consult for infertility.
