Abstract
Introduction: the objective of this study was to correlate male age with different sperm characteristics present in semen analysis and sperm deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) fragmentation. Material and Method: this retrospective descriptive study included 2681 male patients who underwent a semen analysis at Clínica Las Condes (CLC), Santiago, Chile, between January 2014 and May 2017; correlations between age and sperm characteristics were performed. Results: an increased risk of presenting statistically significant abnormalities in their values was seen in men older than 50 years of age for semen volume, sperm concentration and sperm DNA fragmentation; for total sperm concentration, this risk occurred over 41 years and for sperm motility when men were over 31 years old; when concentration was constant, more abnormalities in volume and motility were observed as age increased; when volume was constant, more abnormalities in motility and concentration were observed as age increased; and when motility was constant, a reduction in the values of normal semen volume was observed as age increased. Discussion: results demonstrate that male age affects significantly some sperm parameters, which might have an impact on male fertility.
