Abstract

Objective: The study was done to acertain the contraceptive effects of Aqueous extract of Carica Papaya on Female rats by assessing changes in the body weights, estrous cycle, serum progesterone levels and cyto-architecture Utero-ovarian tissue. Methodology: The study was for 7 and 21 days, respectively. Each study group has their Experimental (treated 200mg/kg aqueous extract of Carica Papaya Seed Extract) and Control group (n=5). The phases and frequencies of the estrous cycles of the rats was determined daily during the administration of the extract. Utero-ovarian tissue processed for histological analysis, Serum progesterone level and oestrus cycle pattern was examined. Results: There was a significant increase in body and ovarian weight in 21 days treatment as compared to control and 7 days treated. however, uterine weight reduced significantly (P<0.05)., Serum Progesterone level decreased (p<0.05) treated rats, mostly in 21 days treatment; the Ovary showed marked degeneration of theca cells, granulosa and corpus luteum and loss of mucin granules in the uterine tissues. Carica Papaya treated for 7 and 21 days had more Proestrus and diestrus cycles as compared to the control. The estrous cycle became irregular, with prolonged diestrous and proestrus phase. Conclusion: The aqueous extract of Carica papaya seeds produced adequate antifertility, anti implantation, by the reduction in progesterone level, disruption of oestrus pattern and histological alteration of utero-ovarian tissue.
