Abstract
Objective: The total number of people infected with HIV is 33.3 million according to 2009 data from the World Health Organization. Of these, 15.9 million women are living with the virus. With the improvement in life expectancy and quality of seropositive patients and lower risk of contamination vertical, HIV serodiscordant couples are considering the possibility of pregnancy with the help of assisted reproduction techniques. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of viral infection by HIV-1 in the oocyte and embryo quality and pregnancy rate.
Methods: The study population consisted of 8 serodiscordant couples in which partners were seropositive for HIV-1, with a mean age of 38.83 years, who underwent 18 cycles of assisted reproduction in the period 2002 to 2010. The control group consisted of 36 matched seronegative couples with regard to factor infertility, age, ovarian stimulation and semen sample in order to have two controls for each serodiscordant couple, who also underwent the program. All patients followed the clinic’s protocol for insemination, culture and embryo transfer.
Results: The results of oocyte retrieval, fertilization and pregnancy rate were not significantly different (p<0.05) between groups serodiscordant and control.
Conclusions: The study showed that viral infection by HIV-1 in women does not impact negatively on the oocyte or embryo quality and pregnancy rate, in agreement with previous studies.
