Abstract
Objective: To correlate age of infertile women and ovarian response in assisted reproduction techniques (ART), and to identify differences between distinct age groups.
Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 226 cycles of ART. Inclusion criteria were the presence of both ovaries, patients submitted to ovulation induction
with recombinant FSH, and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Endocrine and/or genetic diseases, and/or endometriosis were exclusion criteria. Final population of the study included 107 patients. Ovarian response was evaluated by follicular development and the number of oocytes yielded.
Results: Significant negative correlations were found between age and ovarian follicles ≥14mm (r=-0,3733), ovarian follicles ≥18mm (r=-0,4248), total of oocytes yielded (r=-0,3994) mature ones (r=-0,4237) (p<0,0001). The ovarian follicles ≥14mm count in the day of hCG administration was the only variable which significantly differed between groups with ≤35 years (12,86±5,03), 36 to 40 Years (10,0±4,49) and ≥41 years of age (6,4±,66) (p<0,0001). Other variables of ovarian response were significantly different between patients ≤35 years of age and older women.
Conclusions: Women’s age is significantly correlated with ovarian response to stimulus for ICSI cycles and the group ≤35 years of age present with significantly more favorable results when compared with older patients.
