Objective׃ Infertility is a public health issue. This paper intends to debate an experience that addresses the issue of access to therapies in assisted reproduction - ART, in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, from the report of the action of the Social Service in a public unit. We argue that the low coverage to satisfy this by public health reinforces the social inequality in access to technologies in ART, the loss of horizons for research on the social causation of infertility and the difficulties to reverse the current downward trend in fertility. Methods׃ Here are presented the answers forwarded by the social service, between 2006 and 2008, which mobilized health professionals and users in order to give visibility to the collective aspect of this demand, as opposed to individual claims referred judicially. Our intervention targets the establishment of a public program in ART in Rio de Janeiro. Based on legislation, social-demographic, epidemiological and reports of this demand, we decided to mobilize and to debate simultaneously with users and health public professionals. Results׃ the debates produced an understanding of the strong necessity of the democratization of access and of comprehensive care through institutional interaction and interdisciplinary efforts to build an integrated network reproductive care in the Brazilian public health system (SUS).
