Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of culture media used in in-vitro fertilization for cultivate human embryos. The media compared were GV (made in Brazil) and Irvine, HTF and P1 (made abroad). A prospective randomized study was carried out in 82 patients. In 41 patients GV was used and in the other 41, Irvine media were used. Fertilization, cleavage, pregnancy and implantation rates were similar for both groups. Although not significant, a tendency for higher implantation rates was observed with the GV medium (20.70% and 10.71% for GV and Irvine, respectively). Culture media manufactured abroad goes through greater oscillations in temperature during transportation and storage. The GV media, on the other hand, manufactured locally can be consumed in a shorter time span and is not susceptible to the same transportation handling problems faced by the imported media. Therefore, considering the results of this study we believe that the GV medium is a good option for Brazilian clinics.
