Abstract
This article has the objective of studing the smoking habit, the use of illicit drugs, obesity and declining age in the male population of Porto Alegre with infertility claim and the influence of these risk factors in the spermogram parameters. The study design is retrospective cohort, where data was obtained between the years of 2004 and 2007. The parameters analyzed were: ejaculatory volume, vitality, sperm concentration, percentile of motility A and B and sperm morphology. Men who had already had children had a lower percentile of ‘in-loco’ motility than those who didn’t have children (p=0.01). It was also observed a decreased ejaculatory volume and forward motility in older men (p<0.05). There was a lower volume and higher ‘in-loco’ motility in smokers and cocaine users, shorter percentile of forward motility in smokers and greater percentile of dead sperm in cocaine users. Furthermore, there was a greater percentage of intermediate piece abnormalities in marijuana users. However, the data concerning smoking and drug habit were not statistically significant. It was observed that men who had already had children and the younger ones (under 40 years old) may have greater chances of having children, due to better semen parameters. On the other hand, there is a necessity of studying more the interference of smoking and drug use in semen parameters.
