The present work aims to describe the first national report on in vitro maturation of oocytes collected from patients with the polycystic ovarian syndrome in cycles with no controlled ovarian stimulation. Ten patients were enrolled in the program. Oocytes were collected from all patients from follicles with 2-8mm in diameter between the 8o. and 10o. day of the cycle. There wasn’t any significant difference between the rates of oocyte maturation at 24 or 48 hours post collection or fertilization in the two groups (p<0.005). Ninety two percent of the fertilized oocytes (n=34) cleaved to the 2-cell stage, but only 5 (13%) of them showed early cleavage at 27 hours postinsemination. All patients had embryos for transfer, however, the quality of the embryos, according to morphological criteria and their cleavage dynamics, was very poor in this study. We did not obtain any pregnancy in this séries of patients. We believe that once the methodology has been improved, it represents a viable choice for patients with the polycystic ovarian syndrome.
