IUD: Cervical Mucus and Spermatozoa Motility

Abstract

This is a prospective study that was held to report the possible changes that the Cu T 200 model IUD may cause in the cervical mucus as well as in the spermatozoa motility. Ninety patients were invited to join the study. There were 30 IUD users who had been with the device for more than 6 months and 30 others who were to be inserted and reviewed in 6 months. The control group included 30 women with previous tubal ligature. Both biochemical and biophysical characteristics of the cervical mucus were evaluated. At the same time we analyzed the sperm motility in post-coital tests performed in the middle of the cycle. The IUD determined a significant decrease of spinnbarkeit, an increase in the viscosity and a significant increase of the celularity of the cervical mucus. We observed a significant difference between the post-coital tests performed in “old” users x the control group, but not related to motile spermatozoa in the cervix. The cervical mucus elasticity was reduced in the “old” users group compared to the “new” ones. There were no differences in the post-coital test in IUD users after 6 months. The Moghissi score was altered 6 months after the IUD insertion.
