Abstract
Objective: To verify, from a systematic literature review, the impact of COVID-19 on male fertility.
Data sources: The studies were analyzed from the “Pubmed” databases; “Scielo” and “Lilacs”.
Selection of studies: The articles selected for this review included: cross-sectional studies, cohort studies and clinical trials that addressed the proposed theme, the studies were published within the stipulated period from June 2020 to March 2023 in English, Portuguese and Spanish. The exclusion criteria used were: review articles, case reports, abstracts, articles with animal models, duplicate articles and letters to the editor.
Data collection: Author's name/ Year; Number of patients; Age; Presence of COVID-19 in semen; Hormonal changes; Changes in seminal quality.
Conclusion: Hormonal changes and decreased seminal quality were evidenced in patients with COVID-19, but the virus was not found in semen in the articles analyzed, contrary to some findings in the literature. It is important to mention that the methodologies are varied and that because it is a new infection, it is still not possible to state precisely what the consequences are and that there would be a return of fertility after a recovery period, requiring more studies, with more robust methodologies such as cohort studies.
