Abstract
Assisted reproductive laboratories represent intricate environments dedicated to the meticulous handling of delicate human gametes and embryos through complex procedures. Due to complexity of procedures, manual documents and workload, these laboratories are naturally susceptible to mistakes that could jeopardize patient safety, clinical results, and confidence in assisted reproductive technologies. Potential hazards can emerge from malfunctioning equipment, mistakes made by individuals, changes in environmental conditions, or drifting from established procedures. Consequently, establishing a comprehensive framework for evaluating risks, managing them effectively, and monitoring safety is crucial. This review aims to discuss the most significant risk factors in assisted reproductive laboratories, examine established frameworks for risk mitigation, including witnessing, process mapping, key performance indicators, and quality management, while presenting recommended procedures and case studies for improving laboratory safety and performance. The investigation revealed that the application of proactive risk assessment, combined with electronic witnessing and the latest advancements in artificial intelligence, while strictly following international guidelines, can reduce the likelihood of errors and guarantee quality treatment and patient safety.
