Stressors and Preventive Factors Associated with Burnout in Embryologists Working in Assisted Reproduction: Data from a Cross-Sectional Worldwide Study

Abstract

Background/Objectives: Studies performed in recent years in Assisted Reproduction teams have shown that embryologists are the professionals with the highest levels of burnout within the teams. Therefore, the aim of this work was to find out what stressors embryologists endure and what are the preventive and mitigating strategies these professionals consider useful. Methods: The study presents a cross-sectional design. A worldwide online survey assessed workplace stressors and preventive and mitigating strategies associated with burnout in a sample of 759 respondents. Comparisons were performed between embryologists working in Europe, Latin America, North America and Western Pacific. Results: Over 90% of embryologists from the four zones studied identified stressors inherent to the profession, organizational and relational. European and North American embryologists reported significatively more environmental and physical stressors than those from Western Pacific. Regarding preventive and mitigating strategies, physical, organizational and relational were considered the most useful, with many of them being reported by over 90% of embryologists. Latin American embryologists considered psychological strategies significatively more convenient and useful than embryologists from other zones of the world. Conclusions: The present study has identified the stressors that most affect embryologists worldwide, and the strategies embryologists consider useful to fight burnout. Future interventions should include these strategies to control or annulate the stressors identified as this would create better working conditions and positively influence the mental health of these professionals.
