Abstract

Single embryo transfer is highly encouraged on in vitro fertilization due to lower rates of multiple pregnancy. Despite of that, the likelihood of multiple pregnancy is higher when assisted reproductive technology is used, probably because of the embryo manipulation. Timing is crucial in the post-fertilization division of a single embryo to determine the aminiocity and chorionicity of the gestation. In the case reported a 38 year-old woman, nulligravid, had a single blastocyst implanted and that result in monozygotic dichorionic-diamniotic twins. Despite being rare, similar cases have already been reported questioning the current knowledge about time of embryo division and the impact of assisted reproduction.
